Berlin is
the world’s newest capital, the mover and shaker of Europe, by far its
most interesting and exciting city – congratulations for visiting!
Since the fall of the Wall and the decision to
return the capital to Berlin the change has been astronomical. Areas of
the former death-strip and Wall that once divided Europe’s largest
metropolis now make up a futuristically charged city centre. It is
almost hard to imagine that Potsdamer Platz – the European HQ’s of Sony
and Daimler Chrysler, the Holocaust Memorial built next to the Führer
Bunker, the Pariser Platz before the Brandenburg Gate and the stunning
Chancellery and new Government Quarter simply didn’t exist only a few
years ago.
Unlike any other place on earth Berlin is truly at the crossroads of the past present and future. As if picking up from the breakneck pace of the 1920’s, Berlin’s cultural, gastronomical, and nightlife happenings have exploded in variety and quality.
Yet Berlin does not really have a bourgeois / middle class, only an ‘elite’ of diplomatic personnel and government types and then a broad base of real working class Berliners. ‘So what’ you may ask – well it means prices have been kept more than affordable, budget travel will never bring you so much! Visiting the Philharmonie (home of the world’s leading orchestra), eating at fancy restaurants, and staying in fine digs is much cheaper than any other western city you’ll visit.
