Berlin's Jewry has a unique and special history, from the days of the Enlightenment movement, through the horrors of the Holocaust, up to the revival of the present day, as Berlin fosters one of the world's fastest-growing Jewish communities.
Mendelssohn and Einstein are just two examples of Berliner Jews who have been responsible for some of the most significant events in intellectual and cultural development, changing the way all of us – Jews and non-Jews alike – live and think. Yet their achievements came against a backdrop of anti-Semitic harassment and discrimination, which came to a head in the 20th century, with devastating effect.
See the site of the ancient Jewish Cemetery where Mendelssohn is buried, and understand his significance in world philosophy and Jewish history.
Walk through the courtyards where working-class Jewish immigrants dreamed of a better world; hear stories of women who aspired to be Rabbis and rich people who wanted to be poor.
See the the magnificent New Synagogue and hear the amazing story of this building, which reflects the story of Berlin's Jewry before, during and after Nazi persecution.
See places where non-Jews risked their lives in order to hide their Jewish neighbours; visit the Workshop for the Blind in which a courageous Berliner deemed one of the Righteous Men of the World's Nations risked his life to save the lives of Jewish neighbours and employees.
