Frankfurt: Roman outpost, Imperial City to the Holy Roman Emperors, financial hub & crossroads of medieval and modern day Europe. Join us and discover this remarkable city, pulsating with power, yet preserving and retaining its hidden pockets of history.
From 1st Century Roman settlements to those made under the Germanic tribes, Frankfurt was to become of pivotal importance to the German-dominated Holy Roman Empire and is where the German Kings and Emperors were coronated over a millennia ago. Despite the ravages from the Napoleonic Wars, Nazism and obliteration by the bombing raids of WWII, Frankfurt's remarkable cultural legacy prevails making it one of the world's most important cities. Having served as the seat of the first democratically elected German parliament, it is also the city of Goethe and the Frankfurt School, and is nothing less than the financial centre of the European continent. Join our daily walks for a truly "Insider's" experience of this remarkable but little known medieval city/world capital.
We will stand in the Römerburg where Frankfurt has always celebrated. Whether for Royal coronations when the Justizia Fountain flowed with wine, for the annual Christmas Market, Nazi gatherings and their Book Burnings, a visit from JFK, or the finish line for the Frankfurt Marathon, this is where history has happened and is happening in Frankfurt today
Walk through the Archaeological Garden where Roman Baths was discovered during reconstruction in 1953. Ruins of the original church and palace foundations from the 7th century are all there, right where you can touch them for hands on historical experience.
Enter the beautifully restored St. Bartholomews Dom Cathedral where Germany's Emperors were crowned. Find out why it is called the Dom when there is no dome. Burned to the ground once and heavily damaged in the war, this landmark cathedral is a triumph to perseverance.
We will take you to the medieval Jewish cemetery and Frankfurt's Memorial Wall. The Wall contains the names of over 11,000 murdered Jewish citizens of Frankfurt. Find out why this spot was so controversial during the 60s. Walk the outline of the synagogue that the Nazis burned down on Crystal Night.
Stand in front the Alte Oper, one of the most beautiful Opera Houses in the world which was paid for by the citizens of Frankfurt. Even Kaiser Wilhelm said in 1881, that he would not have been allowed to build such an extravagant building in Berlin. Destroyed in the war, it has been brought back to its glorious beauty.
Visit the Eschenheimer Turm, the last tower left from Frankfurt's original medieval city wall. Known for being the most beautiful of the 60 original guard towers, it has survived 800 years. We will also take you to the last section of the City Wall. Built in 1180 and once part of the Jewish Ghetto, it was covered up and forgotten until the bombs of 1944 destroyed the houses surrounding it, revealing the wall, still standing intact.
You will be able to see Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's birthplace, the Nikolai Church, the Customs Tower-built over Emperor Frederick Barbarossa's castle ruins, the last vestige of the palace where Karl the Great (Charlemagne) made his home, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and its famous Bull and Bear bronze statues and much more!
Our guides are native English speakers but also real local Insider's and our goal is that you know Frankfurt like one! We'll share all the know how on discovering the best museums, galleries, restaurants, cafe's and bars, and sites on and off the beaten path!
